You said Dio's freezing ability came out of nowhere during the thundercross split attack to counter it, but that's not entirely true. But the one place we differentiate would be Part 1's Diabolos ex Machina. Well, for the most part, I share your opinion. Even if we didn't exactly know how he'd get stronger if he got the red stone of aja from the beginning, we knew that he could, so it doesn't count.īasically the ex machina tropes are actually kinda common cause they do work to add a certain aspect of either danger or just coolness to the hero in a situation, though some of the more extreme examples can be kinda annoying, especially if they determine the ending (especially if a diabolus ex machina single handedly makes the ending into a bad ending for the protagonists imo). It wasnt a sudden twist that he'd be able to gain a power up. that shit was prophesized pretty early on, definitely way before Kars actually became the ultimate life form.

What about part 2 though? I was originally going to say the whole Kars becoming ultimate life form but.nope. The villain was definitely down on luck and likely would've lost quite easily and sooner without the ability, and it just kinda showed up as a whole twist thing to the stand arrow. The reason I really like this example, other than the fact that I just like Kira, is because it is a better example than the one I gave for part 1. It was a twist that was purely to get kira the extra power he needed to shreck the protagonists. Up until that point we had no idea that a stand arrow was able to do something like power up a stand. Let me explain though, it's not specifically killer queen really, or at least it's not entirely killer queen. Part 4 has probably one of my favorite examples of this in all of jojo's being KILLER QUEEN BITES ZA DUSTO. Some people have their opinions on whether this was a fine move by araki or whether it was a cheap move, but because I've seen this argument a lot recently, I won't give my opinion on it unlike what I'll do with the other parts to not start that argument here. Came to solve a seemingly unsolveable problem (being DIO being ultra stronk). Comes suddenly as a twist in the heroes favor and B. Anyway, jotaro getting TS definitely counts as a deus ex machina because it A. First before I get flooded with comments arguing over this, the point of this post isn't to argue over whether or not part 3 was stupid for jotaro getting TS or not, this post is to discuss the literary tropes of deus and diabolus ex machinas, so please don't start that argument here. Part 3 (yes I skipped part 2 for a reason): part 3 is probably obvious, and a bit controversial.

If Dio didn't have it, he'd have likely been swamped by all of Jonathan and his buddies' hamon powers and we would have seen the series finale right there. It's a cool ability, but it does meet the criteria technically. Is used because otherwise without it the fight and therefore series likely would likely have ended after that fight if Dio wasn't given that ability to give him an edge in combat It is:Īdded suddenly into the plot as a twist to the villain It's not a big one, and definitely not a bad one, but it meets the criteria. When Dio is being confronted by Jonathan and all the other hamon buddies, and Dio fell for the thundercross split attack, and he then froze the dude and killed him, that is technically a diabolus ex machina. Part 1 has a diabolus ex machina that isn't exactly the biggest plot point, but it still counts.

I'mma go in chronological order of parts (with some exceptions) simply because it's easier. In fact, one of my favorite parts centers around the villain taking advantage of a diabolus ex machina.

For those of you that don't know what either of these are, deus ex machina means "god from the machine" and diabolus ex machina means "devil from the machine" and both essentially are the introduction of a plot twist, plot device, or other similar thing conjured purely by the plot to either help the characters (in the case of deus) or go against the characters (in the case of diabolus).įirst before I continue, I wanna point out that neither of these tropes are particularly bad, even if they are often seen as bad or lazy in writing. I'm gonna talk about it's counterpart the diavolus ex machina. Specifically parts 1-4.Īnyway, no I didn't leave out "deus" in the title cause I'm not just talking about the deus ex machina, and I'm actually not even gonna mostly talk about it. Does that seem to contradict itself? If you've ever been in the American school system then it wouldn't.Īs always, spoilers for some parts.
